Physical Therapy

Physical Therapists are licensed healthcare professionals who evaluate people with health problems caused by injury, disease, surgery or wounds and work in conjunction with a doctor’s prescription to develop a treatment plan.  They may also consult with other healthcare professionals such as dentists, nurses, educators, social workers, occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists and audiologists to ensure the desired outcome.  At St. Anthony's Hospital Houston, we provide physical therapy services for inpatient care, ambulatory day surgery care and outpatient care.

Physical therapy patients range from children to geriatrics. Patients can include accident victims as well as individuals with disabling conditions such as low back pain, arthritis, heart disease, fractures, head injuries and cerebral palsy. Our therapists examine patients’ medical histories, test current functionality and assess the ability to become independent after injury or illness.  From there, they create an individualized treatment plan with an anticipated outcome, educate patients and their families, measure progress and modify treatments as necessary.  Physical therapy assistants or aides may perform support tasks.

Most treatment includes exercise to increase flexibility and range of motion, progressing to exercise to improve strength, balance, coordination and endurance.  Physical therapy can also help:

  • Increase and maintain muscle strength and endurance
  • Restore and increase joint range of motion
